Private James Robinson
James Robinson was born on 22 March 1899 in Glenwherry, Ballymena, County Antrim, the ninth of twelve children of farm labourer Thomas Robinson and his wife Jane (née Gardiner). At the time of the 1911 Census he was living at Glenwherry with his parents and four of his eight surviving siblings.
Robinson enlisted in the North Irish Horse on 18 April 1917 (regimental number either 2423 or 2424 – later Corps of Hussars No.71817). He trained at the regiment's reserve camp at Antrim until 5 November 1918, when he embarked for France with a reinforcement draft for the North Irish Horse Cyclist Regiment. They joined the regiment in the field on 22 November, eleven days after the Armistice had brought an end to the fighting.
Robinson was demobilised and transferred to Class Z, Army Reserve, on 5 March 1919.
On 19 September 1919 at Glasgow he re-enlisted in the Hussars (No.79346 – later Army number 535914), serving until discharged on 18 September 1921. His military character was recorded as good.
Robinson later emigrated to Canada.
